Virtuous Pie
To support the fresh launch of their flagship store with aspirations for multiple locations, Virtuous Pie was looking to craft a custom pizza tray to serve guests their renowned vegan pizza. Working closely with the chef, we came up with a design inspired by the flame process used to cook the pizzas, and easy to move around. The wood plates were first assembled from local Big Leaf Maple and then touched, and buffed to give a dark black finish. To mitigate the warping of the wood that occurred during this process, a dovetail joint found in traditional wood-crafted objects was used to hold everything in place. After planning was in place for a location in Portland, Victoria and another in Vancouver we got together to review the current design and assess how its functioned over use. It was revealed that we needed a more durable and long-lasting surface, as the charred plates show significant wear. We re-designed the pizza plates utilizing a product from Paperstone that mimicked the look of charred wood but with the durability of a robust countertop. This version was produced and distributed to all the locations, replacing the old boards and they continue to be used today.
