Daly Co. was invited by industrial designer James Lee to support a commission for the 2015 Canada Winter Games — designing and fabricating the Novak Family Legacy Wall, a donor wall created to honour the individuals and families who made the Games possible in Prince George.
Dunkley Lumber, a locally owned family business, partnered on the project by donating the 2×4 material used in the installation. Working alongside the Yew Wood Shop and OGA Design, Daly Co. helped translate the design concept into a manufacturable system — one that could be built in Vancouver and shipped in sections for assembly in Prince George’s Civic Centre.
To achieve the complex, faceted form, we designed and built a custom metal press. Collaborating with James Spouler, we developed a reusable foam template to register and shape each of the 104 unique segments. The donated 2×4s were cut to consistent lengths, pressed with glue in the jig, and then formed with our custom press.
Each section was numbered, transported, and joined on-site with lag screws and adhesive to complete the final wall. Once installed, nameplates were affixed to the faces of the wood segments. The wall not only commemorates community support for the Games, but also continues as a living record: new plaques can still be added, with proceeds supporting youth sport in Northern BC.
